About Nadi Astrology

Nadi Astrology is a form of Hindu astrology practiced in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and adjacent regions of India. It is based on the belief that the past, present, and future lives of all human beings were foreseen by Hindu sages in ancient times.

In Sanskrit, the word "Nadi" means pulse, subtle channels in the body, or a division of time equal to 24 minutes. In Tamil, the language of Tamil Nadu, "Nadi" means "to search". It signifies the search for one's past, the reason for existence, and the roots and essence of life. In Yoga and Ayurveda, Nadis are subtle channels that carry energy throughout the body, including the Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna Nadis. Grantha means a great book of knowledge.

Nadi Granthas, or the great books of subtle knowledge, are records of the Sapta Rishis. "Sapta" means seven, and "Rishi" means sages. According to Hindu tradition, Lord Brahma conceived the Seven Great Sages to assist in the creation of the world. They were Bhrigu, Angira, Atri, Vishvamitra, Kashyapa, Vashishta, and Agastya. These sages are believed to have known the destiny of every individual who has been born and those yet to be born.

Ancient palm leaf manuscripts reveal the past, present, and future through the divine wisdom of the Sapta Rishis.

The basic concept of Nadi Astrology is the "Nadi". There are 150 Nadis in each sign or Rashi, with one sign covering 30 degrees of the zodiac. The twelve zodiac signs are grouped into three categories: Movable (Chara), Fixed (Sthira), and Dual (Dvisvabhava) signs. The nomenclature of the 150 Nadis is unique to each of these three categories. Thus, there are 1,800 Nadis in the full 360 degrees of the zodiac.

The numbers and names of the Nadis are identical among all four Chara signs. Similarly, among all four Sthira signs and all four Dvisvabhava signs, the names are identical, although their numbering differs. For example, the first Nadi in Chara signs such as Aries is the Vasudha Nadi, whereas in Sthira signs the order is reversed, making Vasudha the 150th Nadi. In Dvisvabhava signs such as Gemini, Vasudha occupies the 76th position. Thus, there are 450 distinctive Nadi names and numbers in the complete zodiac. Nadi texts use this concept of Nadi as the basic unit for prediction, which is why they are known as Nadi Granthas.

The primary center for Nadi Shastra is located at Vaitheeswarankoil, near Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu, South India. The palm leaf corresponding to an individual is identified through the thumb impression. The thumb lines of human beings are classified into 108 types, and the Nadi Palm Leaves are arranged accordingly. Nadi Readers identify the pattern of the thumb impression and retrieve the corresponding set of Palm Leaves. The time required to locate a particular leaf depends on the identification of the thumb impression. Some impressions are identified easily, and the corresponding leaves are found quickly.
